Urgent Call to reveal fate of Mustafa al-Sheikh and Musa Hamada
SHRC

With reference to the appeal issued by the Society for Human Rights in Syria on 2/4/2008 about the arrest of the Surgeon doctor Mustafa al-Sheikh on 27/3/2008 from an operating theatre in a hospital in Aleppo alongside others, the Syrian Human Rights Committee (SHRC) has learnt today from a Syrian source that the families of some of the detainees received phone calls today from security branches reporting the death of  Mustafa al-Sheikh and Musa Hamada in prison.
SHRC calls upon the Syrian Authorities to reveal the fate of the abovementioned detainees immediately and make clear their conditions, where they are being detained and the state of their health. SHRC also calls for their immediate release if they are alive, or for their bodies to be handed to their families if they have indeed died, making clear the reasons that led to their deaths and forming a committee to investigate the repeated incidents of death occurring in Syrian Prisons and detentions.
SHRC also points out the serious deterioration in human rights that is taking place in Syrian prisons and detention centres, detention circumstances, and the inhuman treatment and severe torture that leads to death in many cases. All of this contradicts the Syrian constitution and the international conventions which Syria signed and therefore became party to fulfilling its obligations.
